OverStrikes

and

Errors on Overstrikes

Mis-Struck OverStrikes

The manufacture or remanufacture of large batches of coins did not always go smoothly. At times, the coin being reused was already a mis-struck error. At other times, perfectly good original coins were turned into errors during the Restriking process.

Below are (in order),

an OverStrike with the underlying design Off-Center,

an OverStrike with the top strike (new design) Off Center,

a Double Struck OverStrike,

and a re-used Brockaged planchet.

Sometimes, the original coin was Off-Center

Russia 1755 5 Kopeks over O/C Kopek

A 1755 Kopek struck over a “Cross” type 5 Kopek

(Please note that the underlying “Cross” is Off-Center, lower right)

Sometimes the Over Strike (top strike) is Off Center

Italy 1918 20c o/c over 1894

An Italy 1918 20 Centisimi struco Off Center over an Italy 1894 20 Centisimi

And sometimes the OverStrike is Double Struck

France D/S1704 over a 1691 Half Ecu

A French 1704 ½ Ecu Double Struck over a 1691 ½ Ecu (see insets below)

(Please note the original 1691 date in the lower left obverse legend and the two 1704's near the top of the reverse).

1691 Date (inset)

Two 1704 Dates

At times, old Mis-struck coins were used, as in the case of this OverStrike over a Brockage:

East Indies OverStrike

1766 Netherlands East Indies Duit, OverStruck on a Brockage)

(Note the inset "V" and the backwards date on the reverse)

There are many OverStruck coins available, starting at only a few dollars each. A great collection of Overstruck Errors can be made!
